The main character annoyed me a lot most of the time BUT I did find myself really engaged with the plot and asking questions the whole time

This book pulled me in from the start. The language was a bit hard to understand at the beginning but as I kept reading it became easier. Can't wait to pick up the next book and keep going with the series

OH MY GOD. Reading this along with the audiobook made it ten thousand times better! I literally reacted out loud so many times and never wanted to put it down. It didn’t help that I had two dogs in my lap and one by my feet at a certain point in the book

This series does such a great job of creating moral confusion. It’s something that stayed with me long after reading the book. After my reread, I found that the story was a little bit more entertaining and nuanced than when I first read it. Excited to explore the rest of the books for the second time.

This book is my absolute favorite! I read this when I was younger and decided to buy it because I remembered loving it. The character development in this book is immaculate. The plot is beautiful and I can’t wait to read the next book. This will definitely be a book I’ll recommend for many years.

In some ways, the genre of this book isn't as relevant as what it explores. This book, in parts, is pretty gory and downright depressing. I wasn't too shocked or impressed by the setting or the plot but I really liked the characters and their journey throughout the book.

An oldie but it was a goodie. Not sure it really needed to be so long, as parts seemed to drag on, especially towards the end, but overall a strong story. It’s only the second Patrick Ness I’ve read, but I am still impressed. I will continue with the series at some point.

This is a very engaging start to a dystopian YA series. The concept is unique and well executed. The writing style Ness uses really helps immerse you in the world and helps you understand what being bombarded by others’ thoughts would be like. The two main characters are both teenagers and they are written like teenagers which I appreciate. The story is told from Todd’s perspective, and thus, like him, we are left unaware of the reality and truths of this world until they are revealed along the way. Figuring things out as we go was an effective way to keep the reader’s interest up throughout the story. The pacing was very quick and THAT ENDING definitely left me wanting to continue on with the series.
