It is a book one must give 4 stars because it is a beautifully grotesque atrocity, reminiscent of Nabokov.

Clearly meant to be dramatic and dark, it felt over-done in a way that was comical.

Whatever the author is doing with the French Revolution allusions is lost on me, as I have tried and failed to learn about that history. The plot at face value has its moments but drags at times.

I hate DNF’ing but I just couldn’t do it. I typically don’t mind an intense book or darker plot lines, but something about this book made me feel so empty and squirmy….it was not worth finishing.

I loved this book!!! An almost otherworldly historical fiction where many truths of the Gilded Age and beyond were muddied with fantastical characters
(who were also loosely based on historical figures, as became clear to me—one more obvious than the other, I’d say).
I love Heather O’Neill’s writing style—no simile or metaphor is included without continuing to serve the story. Amazing.
