Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a nice bit of spice, but I need a strong plot line and character development and both just missed the mark. The subplots were a bit too ambitious, never fully getting the attention they deserved. The characters were pretty cliche and very one dimensional, despite having the most groundwork laid for pretty complex backstories. I’d hoped to dig deeper into Nate’s relationship with his father and Anastasia’s mental health struggles, but we merely got surface level explanations at best.
A few trigger warnings: There was a LOT of glorification of disordered eating, a hefty bit of slut shaming, and a way too heavy dose of misogyny for my tastes.
Graphic: Body shaming, Eating disorder, Emotional abuse, Fatphobia, Gaslighting, Toxic friendship, and Dysphoria
Moderate: Misogyny
Minor: Sexual assault and Death of parent

Jesus Christ. What was this and why was it THIRTEEN HOURS long. And why did I have to hear so much about fucking blowjobs. “Your Christmas gift to me was letting me cum inside you without a condom” Gross. GROSSSSSS. And people are swooning in all the reviews about Nate being a perfect bf and everything excuse me while I puke.
This is a book I purchased on Libro as a “fun read” and had to suffer through because I’d paid money for it.
And not to be super extra about it, but for all the fucking they did, they never fucked when he was in his hockey uniform or she was in her leotard which feels like a missed opportunity that tiktok would have EATEN UP.
Also, I thought that Nathan was gonna have to skate with her in the final, which would have made more sense with the rest of the book.
Oh, and we’re just going to throw this little diddy into the epilogue where the FMC is pregnant (and her therapist who has been her therapist for like 14 years says that pregnancy suits her????): “with an Olympic gold medal winner as a mother and a Stanley cup winner as a father….” (paraphrased) ???????????? NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE THIS WAY
