Read it for school. Not my cup of tea, but I don’t want to give it any stars since I can’t compare it to my usual books.
Also, the plot twists in the last 50 pages - damn. Did not see them coming.

Few authors soothe my soul like Willa Cather. Great pandemic selection. Reminds me of how much others have struggled and suffered, and yet persevered. So beautifully written.

This book is so lifelike it's startling - so many moments that feel truer than life itself. The prose is breathtaking, and Alexandra is so nuanced as a protagonist.
I could read this book every year and never tire of it.
A few remarkable excerpts:
"She had felt as if her heart were hiding down there, somewhere, with the quail and the plover and all the little wild things that crooned or buzzed in the sun. Under the long shaggy ridges, she felt the future stirring."
". . . the same pulling at the chain—until the instinct to live had torn itself and bled and weakened for the last time, until the chain secured a dead woman, who might cautiously be released."

A short volume one of a trilogy, the book centres on life on the prairies and the early settlers who endured it. I was drawn into the historical setting and impressed by how the author brought it to life. The book is very well written with superb descriptions of landscapes and people. Storyline is strong and cleverly paints a wonderful picture of how life was then.
I look forward to volumes 2 and 3.

This was a wonderful, well-written work, and I am glad to have read it. Still wondering if it is the right fit for a 9th grade class.
