This is the second Cather novel I've read where the description has made me think "eh" but then I really like it.

This short novel is a gem! The beautiful descriptions of the land, the characters, and the slowly unfolding story really drew me in and gave me a glimpse of life on the prairie a century ago.

I'm not sure what to rate this book. The writing style was very descriptive and lovely, and I didn't mind the slow pace or the drama at the end of the book. It is also a feminist book for its own time, which was interesting to read. However, it was written in 1913 and it portrays America from the perspective of that time-period, with a lot of "we (the colonists) were the first to touch these wild untamed lands" vibes.
Overall, four stars for the writing and the story, but also minus four stars for the complete erasure of indigenous people besides one (negative) reference to a child possibly being a descendant of a Native American.

I...don't really understand. This was a good book with a massively strong female lead, beautifully written and quick and easy to read but...nothing really happened? I don't really understand the point. I did enjoy the relationship arcs. Overall, solid read, but not one of my all-time favorites.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Cather’s writing is alluring and gorgeous, it paints a clear portrait of the paradox of freedom in the American west, the resilience of the immigrant community, and the joys and sorrows of womanhood on the prairie.

Such an amazing story!
