O Pioneers!

Willa Cather

I expected a tome when I went looking for this on the library shelves; I did not expect something so small, so slim. The story was full and the writing was gorgeous.

I love this book. :) I just read it for the third time, in honor of Nebraska's 150th celebration and a trip through western Nebraska. "My Antonia" is justly celebrated, but part of me thinks I love this one more. It is deeply sad, and deeply beautiful.

I liked the prose and Alexandra. Willa Cather has a beautiful writing style and sketches an interesting immigrant dynamic within her story. I’m not sure I liked the ending or the general plot?

Willa Cather is one of the major authors we are studying in my Women and Gender in Literature class. We are focusing on 19thCentury authors, and this was our first major novel by Willa Cather.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
Alexandra is interesting and Emil creates some interesting relationships with her and other characters.
Marie really grew on me and I always like a good book that doesn't give you the expected happy ending.
On the side, Ivar just made the book that much more pleasant to read.
Definitely worth a read, and not very long to get through. Quick, easy but thought provoking read.

Wow.

I know I've read this so why can't I remember it?

Once the gun came out I remembered.

Set in Nebraska as the prairie was being tamed, Cather tells the story of a Swedish family. Alexandra, the oldest sister, holds everyone together. Despite the short sightedness of her brothers, she prevails over them and creates a rich and large farm. But she is alone. The youngest brother, her pride and joy, falls in love with a married woman. They are both murdered by her husband.

Willa Cather writes great description and real characters. While O Pioneers is not my favorite novel of her writings, it is well worth reading. She has the ability to write characters and situations that make you grow by seeing yourself and your weaknesses (and possibly strengths).

I'm excited to read all of her novels this year. Two down, ten to go.

Cather had such a gift for portraying frontier life, and in this novel she gives us a wonderful, strong heroine. Alexandra Bergson grows up in the prairie lands of Nebraska and as an adult, she turns her family’s land into prosperous farming operation. Her brothers benefit from her strong mind for business but resent her as well.
