This book is super sweet and I really liked the main character’s development throughout. I thought the situations Center put her in were perfect to challenge her and show her growth throughout the chapters.
HOWEVER
The age difference was difficult for me to reconcile. 10 years is a big deal when one of you is 22 and the other is 32. There are multiple times in the book where the main character says she wishes she “fell for him earlier.” How MUCH earlier ma’am????????? He’s been in love with her since he was 16 (when they met. At her wedding. When she was 26. Getting married. To another adult) and everyone’s like man, what took you so long to come around to him? And I’m like, well, he was 16. And then when he was 17 she was 27. Then 18 and 28. Uh….
When I wasn’t thinking about it I was able to just enjoy the book, but it’s thrown around a lot — especially when comparing her to the other hikers, who are all college students. She even thinks, when Windy and Jake are rumored to be getting engaged, that that would be more appropriate since she’s also in her early 20s!!!!! Like????

I think the permanent blindness thing was tossed in too late. We learn about Jake’s condition at the ~70% mark, and by then, she’s already in love with him, and most of her arc is over. I was hoping he’d be able to talk more about it, but it’s kind of just something that hangs over their relationship and hovers in the background. Idk.
