2.5 stars. I enjoyed the story but found the writing style bland. I'm still interested to know what happens so I'll read book 2. No, I just read the blurb for book 2....no interest.

I really thought I could push through this book and things might improve, but unfortunately I had to DNF. The main character was okay….but I didn’t love them. Often their behaviour seemed over the top and unrealistic. Nobody should be inserting themselves that much in a murder investigation!!
The FMC’s interest and desire for the MMC also felt incredibly shallow. More times than I can count the FMC went on and on about how attractive this man was. And then nothing else. She really knows nothing about him (except that he’s a police chief and has a nice house) yet she’s practically in love with him. Their connection felt not only one sided but vapid. The FMC knows nothing about the MMCs personality, habits, desires, etc and she doesn’t seem to care. After all, he’s hot!!! Eye roll.
It was disappointing that the FMC states that she has supposedly made friends with certain characters, but never actually read how that happens. It felt somewhat jarring and lazy.
The book also felt like it was subtly trying to push certain beliefs onto me which made me uncomfortable.
Final minor point. This novel is closer to magical realism than fantasy.

I don't know, I didn't really like any one and wasn't too keen on the storyline either.

This was an ok read. FMC seemed smart for most of the book and then the ending came. Which dropped her IQ for me. I’ll try book 2

It wasn't that it was terrible, it is just that Selene is really, really, really stupid. I mean, yeesh.

She deserved to end up in jail by the end, at minimum. And honestly, she probably should have ended up dead. This lady is dumber than a box of hair.

I like cozy mysteries, paranormal or not. I like the occasional low-stress read, which these are. But I like for the leads to exhibit common sense and survival skills. If you are going to go meandering through a murder-mystery, let's please do it with a good eye on your health and well-being, please.

Selene just ambles through this whole book like an affable toddler, curious and positive no harm can come to her even though people are dying all over the place. She knows they are murdered by magic, yet
Spoilershe has no problem inviting the last person to see the murdered guy over to come sleep on her couch ... because she's a scrawny young girl.
Total dumbass.

Probably will not read onward.
