Poignant. Concise. Quick to read, but keeps you thinking about it long after. An allegory for the plight of exploited, hard-working Asian immigrants, I think, and it's hopeful and made me really care. I thought of The Arrival, and then realized it's the same author. Of course!
3.5 stars. There is so much in this book, yet I am not sure where it sits or how effective it is. The illustrations are worlds away from Shaun Tan's usual fare. Drab & realistic, rather than the fanciful elements that usually dominate his work.
I find its message very unclear. Is it a comment on the drudgery of work? On racism/discrimination? On the light at the end of the tunnel? On all of the above & more? I'm not sure.
It will be interesting to see how kids react to this one. Will they be intrigued & discuss the possibilities? Or bored & disconnected? I can see it going either way.

Beautiful art, sad yet funny story with an uplifting ending.

My little heart
This is so cute but a little sad - definitely for older audiences as it has more adult themes.
Art work is stunning as always, definitely going to have to make some fan art of this little guy
