This is a family drama with some very unpleasant characters, especially the males in the story.
It is very atmospheric and also eerie in places. I felt that the storyline could be confusing in places.
The pacing was off with this book. It could have been 50-100 pages shorter.
If you are a fan of books set in eerie buildings and gothic settings, this could be the one.

I read this because its a Richard and Judy Book Club pick and it was *interesting*. I didn't love it but I did really enjoy the way it was written with going through the different time periods and then going back to the present time again. I think this book was just meant to be a little weird which it did succeed at and it was unlike anything else I have ever read. If you think you would enjoy go ahead and try it.

Sometimes Harriet Evans is exactly what you need! I really enjoyed this.

A little predictable, but it kept me hooked, great read. I had listened to bits of it as an audiobook and it was excellent as well.

Like the premise, found all the hoity toity class life annoying to read. It somewhat makes me understand why Tories are they way they are. The sense of entitlement, the superstition and the idea that they alone have the claim to history. Intergenerational trauma is something this country really needs to deal with.

Had to finish this last night! Beautifully written, definitely recommend this book. I never like to write too much and spoil the story. But the way that Jane and Kitty were clearly woven together by unseen hands - was very interesting. The innocence of children, the ways in which they are expected to be of age and the ways that they are not prepared for adulthood. The mania involved in the following of a family heritage and the destruction it causes.

I really enjoyed this - read it all in one go, couldn’t put it down! I really liked how we jumped through time and between character perspectives to explore the story & how it all came together in the end.

While it was written I felt it could have been half the size and still told the story
