Yech, incest and abuse abound in this depressing novel. Man marries 12-year old girl, then treats her like shit after she bears his children and starts paying lots of extra attention to his precious favored oldest daughter. The little sisters suffer abuse and neglect after their mother dies. I think you can see where this is going.

The novel is filled with numerous big and small tragedies and that makes it a bit emotionally difficult to read. Nonetheless, it is quite well-written, the author has a distinct voice. The narration feels detached. Some blurbs say that the book is funny - some tiny portions are - but it's *not* a funny book.

description

I really liked this book. The family history is fascinating, and though it's very dark, parts are also funny, which makes for a great balance.

Frustrating, tedious read that felt like the Cape Breton version of A Little Life. Hundreds of traumatic story lines that went no where and by the end I was just exhausted. Should come w a massive TW for sexual abuse, disturbing

I was supposed to read this book in college, and I didn't make it too far. So, I decided to give it another chance, and I ended up enjoying it. I'll admit that the beginning of the book took a bit to get going, which is probably why I didn't finish it for my class. There's a lot going on in this book, which is probably why my professor chose to use this text for the particular class I was taking.
