Nobody sees,” the man says. “And nobody cares.”
Dan Garvie has spent his entire life deeply affected by an encounter he had with a serial killer when he was a boy. He narrowly escaped the killer, but did not help a young victim, even though he knew he was in danger. Years later, he has become a psychologist and criminal profiler, dedicating his life to helping victims. When his father, a retired police officer, goes missing, apparently having committed suicide, he returns to his small island home to seek answers. He finds himself investigating a series of murders and disappearances and is forced to face the trauma of the past.
The Man Made of Smoke was a dark, atmospheric, haunting psychological thriller that explored themes of guilt, revenge, and justice, as well as addressing father son relationships. I found it creepy, riveting, addictive and impossible to put down. Alex North once again proves he is a master of the genre.
