ummmm sure? this was not easy to listen to because i could not figure out who’s POV we were in most of the time
The first half of this book? Easy 5 stars. Creepy, atmospheric, and unsettling in the best way, with a backstory that slipped seamlessly into the present timeline. But the second half… bro fell off. It took a weird detour, felt disjointed, and ended up more confusing than compelling.
So, unfortunately I didn’t love this as much as The Whisper Man. That being said, I’ll still stand by North. He’s a gifted writer who knows how to weave characters together with nuance, and the way he handled the conversations between the living and the dead was just chef’s kiss. I highlighted so many lines - it’s clear the talent is there, even if the execution in this story wobbled.
“When you’re young, there’s so much time left ahead of you. You can still achieve something. But then suddenly you realize that time is mostly behind you now, and there’s only the fact that you didn’t.”
“A lot of growing up, she’d tell him, gently stroking his forehead, is about pretending there’s no such thing as monsters until you eventually realize that it’s true.”
“People can hide things away from you in the spaces between seconds, never mind weeks and months.”

Moderate: Child abuse, Child death, Death of parent
A well-written, atmospheric, drawn out and repetitive slog that relied too much on characters having imagined conversations with other people in their heads. Also, the climax was super cliched and overdone and made me want to DNF several times.
Not as interesting and his other books, and somewhat predictable but still a fun and read.

I did shed some tears when John Garvie got his acknowledgments :’)

Twisty thriller that you never know what is coming next! Different timelines and points of view- would recommend!
