I had read “The Whisper Man” by Alex North and like it, so when I saw “The Man Made of Smoke” I immediately added it to my TBR. I just finished it, and I was not disappointed. I really felt for Dan, who saw something when he was in between a child’s age and an older teenager, torn between being afraid and wanting to do something. It’s something he’s regretted since. His father, John, a retired policeman takes a closer look at some cold cases. Both of their lives are upset in a way that neither of them could predict…This was a believable story line, the characters are memorable, and how everything comes to light at the end is kind of satisfying and kind of sad. Good book! I liked it!!

When he was a boy, Dan Garvie crossed paths with the Pied Piper serial killer, ignoring a gut feeling that the young boy accompanying the weird man needed help. Now a criminal profiler, he works to help victims of similar evil. When his father "commits suicide," Dan returns home, sure that his father's death is connected to the Pied Piper.

In all fairness, I listened to the audiobook of this novel and found myself OFTEN spacing out and having to rewind- there's a chance that if I'd been less stressed, I may have liked this thriller a bit more.  For what it's worth, the ending action sequence was pleasantly suspenseful.  Dan himself isn't a super likable character, but the overall idea for the story was creepy (in a good way). 3☆

This is just what I’ve come to expect from Alex North. Tense, gripping, and creepy AF. The Whisper Man is still my favorite of North’s books, but this is a close second.

I love Alex North. I knew this book was gonna be a solid 5 stars after reading The Whisper Man. This one was just as unputdownable!
