the ending of the first book genuinely brought me to tears. there were many moments where i felt like i’ve been stabbed, and others, i’ve been given a very tight hug. i cannot perfectly capture into words the true Malice experience. this duology has a special place in my heart because of how truly it was made for us misfits and members of the lgbtqiaa+ community 🫂 definitely recommend this! 🌟

I loved the world building and the pacing of the book. The romance in this book is also very heartwarming.

This book got me out of a reading slump of more than a year. It was very enjoyable as long as your imaginative.

queer sleeping beauty !!!!

I love Aurora; she’s the opposite of the traditionally passive sleeping beauty, outspoken and passionate for change. And the romance! At first Aurora seeks Alyce out because she’s different, and Alyce is so grateful to have someone who sees her for who she is. Both trapped in gilded cages and so they find solace in each other, which I thought was lovely. But their romance did feel a little underdeveloped. Especially with Alyce’s jealous moods, over-the-top and misplaced for how little they know each other.

The concept of the different Graces is interesting, and Alyce spends a lot of time discovering her powers & heritage. But ultimately, her character arc and other aspects of the book were hindered by the writing style. Malice is labeled adult, but it reads as YA in the worst ways – it can be repetitive, Alyce comes off self-centered or inconsistent, and it isn’t very immersive. Which is unfortunate because the ideas here are gorgeous :((

There’s a lot happening in the last 1/3 (which should’ve been spread out throughout the book), including Alyce’s descent into villainy. This part feels, to me, like Alyce has very quickly become a very different character - a drastic shift from ‘helping my bully and cleaning her rug’ to ‘burning the city and damning the innocent’.

I do like where the story ends - Alyce being the one to create the scene of Sleeping Beauty, with the spindle and thorns and herself the dragon, is such a fascinating twist on the myth. But I wish that if this was where it was going to go, the book would’ve been written as a slow descent into it, not this sudden jump.

Practically DNF — I skimmed this. The plot is predictable and the world building is chunky. My expectations for this book were so high but the romance isn’t even a slow burn tension, both girls are clearly so into each other with no reservations beyond the Romeo/Juliet court issues.
This could be adapted as an excellent web comic. The pacing and info-dumping would be good with maps and visuals. Grand dinners and ballrooms and snide comments. It’s made for graphic panels.
Still. Didn’t like this read.
