Fascinating insight into the works and mind of one of the most interesting authors of the last 25 years. I read her Neapolitan Quartet this year and was floored by its truth, humanity and seamless integration of many different aspects of Italian life and our flaws and strengths as humans, women, mothers.
Read this with care, there is a lot to learn from her thoughts on the literary process, culture, socialism, feminism etc.

I mostly read letters to get insight into the writer. Obviously not the case here, I still got a lot out of it, but very heavy going.

"We know everything about the male symbol system; they, for the most part, know nothing about ours, above all about how it has been restructured by the blows the world has dealt us. What's more, they are not even curious, indeed they recognize us only from within their system."

Let me say this again, Elena Ferrante is one of the greatest writers of our generation (if not the greatest). Reading Frantumaglia felt like taking a long, beautiful walk inside her brain and knowing what it meant for her to be a writer. Her writings on literature are just splendid. I felt another tremendous appreciation for her existence and her writing. 👏🏻
Also, she mentioned three of my favorite writers (Austen, Woolf, and Lispector) as women whom she finds “literary power” and I think that that’s just great because I LOVE all these authors.
