I always question how to rate memoirs. Like, who am I to rate someone’s personal story? It seems others feel similarly.

The majority of Carrière’s life was incredibly hard to read. It certainly did not shy away from childhood neglect, self harm, addiction, paranoia, psychiatric malpractice, self indulgence, and so much more.

This wasn’t a read most people I know would enjoy. I’m still digesting it. One of my book club friends said that writing this memoir seemed therapeutic for Carrière, but traumatic for readers. That I agree with. Definitely check the trigger warnings before reading.

Beautifully written. A bit difficult at times, the subject matter starts out hard but it is more than worth seeing it out to the end. This is what a memoir should be

Absolutely incredible memoir. I had never heard of Alice or either of her parents before but was recommended this book by a friend, who knows I love memoirs and hearing stories of people's lives. Getting to hear Alice share herself and her family was magnificent and heartbreaking. Her writing was insightful, funny, poetic, and real. Hearing her narrate it herself brought so much to it as well. Incredible.

A brutally honest reflection of life. I’ve found myself drifting between wildly varying books and this one really made me stop and pause. There’s no doubt that this is a heavy read but there’s something deeply human about it and I love it for that. It adeptly captures the deep intricacies of relationships between people and the long lasting impact they hold for better or worse.
