Soft DNFed 340 pages in. Overall a solid and well paced, with characters I really like and root for. Towards the end one of the other characters' POV chapter kind of spoiled the ending for me plus Willow's motivations changing made me kind of lose interest. But still, great read!

2.5 stars down

Felt repetitive and too long
Never as good once you see the monster (would've been better left with some ambiguity?)
Not enough real horror/creepiness

The premise? So fun.
Execution? Left something to be desired.

I loved the format of the book. It alternated between storytelling and things like text messages and newspaper articles, so it moved pretty quickly despite the length.

But it wasn’t as scary as I wanted it to be and the ending really fell flat.

Mehhh…..way to long of a book. Should have put it down and moved on.

I really enjoyed this! It was creepy, I loved the mixed media aspect! I was engaged and loved the reveal that they thought re-enacting the same day would make The First One think it had just culled the island and leave them alone.

It was a creepy horror story that also explored the idea of grief and the stagnant nature of it for people. I genuinely had a fantastic time.

My only issue is that it did drag a bit. Once we got the reveal, we just kind of rehashed things for a while. But it was really enjoyable and I'm so sad for Willow.
