This started strong but the ending blew it for me. Definitely inspired by The Village.

2.75?
I enjoyed the first half while Harper/Willow investigate and things are slowly revealed. However, I thought the ending wasn't very exciting and the book itself, too long.

Spoiler I thought the idea of the "soldiers" fighting and lurking in the "real world" to scout new island members all in this great cause to save the world, a little silly. I wish it has been a more isolated evil that fit with the original island isolation vibe. It seems that the threat of total antihalation of the island itself would be enough...

I really enjoyed the format of this and it had Midnight Mass/From/Lost vibes, which I always love. I do think book overall was too long, and because of that none of the reveals packed a huge punch for me. It didn't creep me out as much as I was expecting, but I still really enjoyed this and had times where I couldn't put it down. Would be so fun adapted as a mini-series. I think stories like this are so ambitious to take on and Jimmy slayed!

really good, this is going to be a staple for when i’m asked for spooky/mystery recs

“People just seemed, how do I explain this, careful when they spoke to me? Every conversation at the pub seemed just little too hushed, a bit too careful. There was this odd cloud of concern hanging over the entire place. I don't think I can adequately give it justice.
The whole night was just a microcosm of the social experience up here. People are nice, but there's something just a bit off. Their smiles are a bit too stiff, their pleasantries a bit too practiced. I talk to people as much as I can, and sometimes it feels like I'm speaking with preprogrammed robots.”

Excellent premise, very slow pacing. Would have loved to see this as a novella instead, since once you get the idea of what's going on on the island, there's little left to reveal.

Wonderful book! The POV switches combined with the slow increase of dread and gradual exposing of the creature is masterfully done. The 'open' ending (the Thing still lives) allows for multiple interpretations of what might happen in the future too. Love it!
