This book reminded me a lot of the night visions episode where they wouldn't let anyone listen to music in a small town in the middle of nowhere and this guy gets stuck in the town and causes trouble. Also big shades of Wickerman, which is a huge positive for me.

I liked the writing and the audiobook narration was great, but there got to be a point where the story started to really drag and was kind of meh. The book didn't have depth or bring any emotion to the table - despite being about grief and obviously aiming at suspense and weird spooky vibes. To sum up in one word: forgettable.

This was a looooong book! But I enjoyed it for the most part, as it only took two days to finish. The entire premise of the book is unlike most other horror I’ve consumed recently. It did, however, remind me a lot of the Amazon Prime series From, as well as The Babadook movie. So overall, right up my genre alley.

Reviewers seem to be pretty divided on whether or not the writing style/format worked, but I enjoyed it really. I like the more mixed “media” style and when writers take risks like that. And all in all, I just found this to be a pretty entertaining story.

On the more negative side, I do think there were several missed opportunities in the storytelling. The monster lore, for example, could have/should have been stronger and more detailed. I would have been a lot more invested if there was just a bit more of a deep dive.

I used to read stories on the "NoSleep" forum daily and this felt very reminiscent of that so I actually really enjoyed this. I liked how the author connected this story and the cast in the audiobook format performed this really well, keeping me interested and engaged throughout. The ending is not what I was expecting at all (I was personally hoping it would be more of a psychological thriller ending with a really good twist) but I feel satisfied with how the story wrapped up though I would've loved to get Connor's POV after the events at the house.
