I had to read this for my Shakespeare class, the entirety of this play is based off the fact that the main “villian” is Jewish. My professor discussed how Shylock really isn’t the villian but the antisemitic views that the main characters have is what makes him the villian.tildafin16's review

This play was hard to rate. I found it far more engrossing than some other Shakespeare plays, and I found monologues from the Prince of Morocco, Shylock, and Portia to be wonderfully meaningful and beautifully written. But. There is horrendous anti-Semitism and racism in this play, it was hard to read. Why are the heroes of this play so prejudice? Why is Shylock, capable of high-minded thoughts and empathy, brought down to the lowest cruelty with no regard for reason? Why would Antonio and his friends expect mercy when he and they continuously demean Shylock for his religion?

This is one of the bard's misses for sure. In class, it offered up wonderful debates about antisemitism, racism, and homosexuality. However, I do think that it does Shylock injustice, and makes him into an antisemetic caricature. Just like any one of Shakespeare's works, it is open to interpretation, but I think that what happens to Shylock in the end proves that the play isn't sympathetic to him. I do like the queer themes though. Besides all that, it has a long and slow second act that really bogs down the momentum of the play. I see why this one isn't preformed too often.
