I really wanted to love this book.
But the fact of the matter is that despite having a compelling plot and characters that could've been developed into something spectacular, it falls behind because of the dearth of purple prose.

The prose is very dated, and it's so difficult to get into the meat of it because there's so much italicised thinking and mind words and repeating of the same word or phrase over and over again.

The characters call themselves lions and tigers and snakes but their actions are that of mice. I really hope the second book will give me a bit more of characterisation to speak of because I can see myself liking who I assume they could become, but reading this book felt exactly like a slow, slough through a vat of honey.

I really liked following Zafira and Nasir, plus their zumra, as they quested on Sharr. I enjoyed seeing their friendship unfold. The world building was great and the ending was exciting- I'm very interested to see where the next book takes the story!

Before starting this book, I thought it’s gonna be like Mulan but in Middle East settings because I misunderstood and focused only the fact that the main girl had to disguise as a man bc the leaders is a strong head sexist. While reading this,
she reveals herself too quickly, I thought there’s gonna a moment where the ml doesn’t aware of fl gender and doing something like bathing together or changing his clothes in front of her and the starting having feelings for her while she’s still in disguise. But that’s didn’t happen
for the plot, it’s pretty straightforward some twists that’s not too surprising. I like the chemistry of the fl and ml but I didn’t feel invested in the characters that much except Deen.

The ML is unforgivable imo and I couldn’t continue. Also the the love story was very … blah
