Es war einmal in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino

Reads like the ultra director's cut companion to the film - Tarantino doesn't just add scenes or dialogue, he dives into the Marinia Trench of inner thoughts of his characters. Care to know how easy-livin' stuntman Cliff Booth feels about Kurosawa films? That's what the entire second chapter is about, essentially, and it kinda just goes on like that.

You also get some absolutely buck-wild reveals about best-bro leads Rick and Cliff, which to spoil here would be poor form, but I will just straight up say that if Brad Pitt had been allowed to perform even 30% of what is in this book for the movie, he would either have won a bonus Oscar or been thrown in prison, or both.

You know if this is for you, and I wouldn't even attempt to sell this to anyone except hardcore OUATIH fans.

Imagine Bret Easton Ellis wrote American Psycho after the movie came out. Then you can imagine what this reads like.

Part character study part cinema history lesson. Not necessarily a direct adaptation of the film of the same name. Covers the broad strokes of the plot but is more a rumination on the passage of time, missed opportunities and the quest for fame in an attempt to remain young and relevant, and the eventual realisation that it isn't the be all and end all.

As flawed as this was, I really enjoyed it. That's mainly because I love the world Tarantino's created and I would revel in it for days if I could. A good companion piece to the movie, but it's obvious Tarantino has some work to do as a novelist before he makes something to match his films.
