I tried really hard to love this book, but the slow build up and unreliable narrator finally did me in, I enjoyed this book, but probably won't read it again. This is a chick lit suspense novel (think Girl on the Train or Gone Girl) without as many jaw dropping surprises. Abby Williams left her small Indiana hometown without a backward glance, fleeing to Chicago to become a lawyer. When a potential water crisis brings her back to the place she grew up she has more questions then ever. Whatever happened to the Queen Bee, Kaycee? Why is Optimal so involved with this small town, are they trying to buy people's love so that they can get away with slowly poisoning the water? Is the game they played in high school still continuing? Abby keeps digging but everything keeps bringing her back in time. The answers may cost her everything and be darker than she ever imagined but she can't walk away. For a debut author and celebrity actor, this book is really well crafted and written, it just wasn't my style.

This story had me guessing all the way up to the very end. There were so many interwoven mysteries happening at once that were all connected in one way or another, but not in a way that was too obvious or too confusing. I absolutely LOVED this book!

An environmental thriller with women's studies aspects would typically be my jam, but the writing style was a little lacking and Abby as a protagonist didn't seem to be as fleshed out as she could have been. On that note though, the mystery definitely kept me intrigued the whole way through the novel.

I was really excited after reading the blurb for this. I’ve been a sucker for mystery suspense novels recently. Couple that with the fact that I am a fan of Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones is pretty much the only Marvel netflix original that’s good), I was super exited about picking this up!
I found it to just be pretty boring. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, especially Abby, the protagonist. She felt like a very stiff character with little to no personality. The mystery was intriguing, but I felt like the reveal wasn’t that surprising or interesting. I think this book could’ve made an excellent YA contemporary. Have the book set back in Abby’s high school years and I would have loved it.
The ending was way too abrupt. I would’ve liked just a little more detail about everything that happened.

I wouldn’t recommend it. I am still looking forward to Ritter’s next books, I believe she’ll grow as a writer.

This is actress Krysten Ritter's debut novel and I definitely recommend it. The story was familiar but not in a derivative way. This was an advanced readers copy that I received through First To Read and I could not put it down. I literally took my iPad with me when I left my apartment so I could keep reading it. A great first novel! Give it a look when it comes out in November.

Good storyline that kept me in my car listening to it when I had reached my destination. Had now idea "Jessica Jones" wrote it until I was about halfway through it.

TBH I only picked up this book because I do really like Krysten Ritter as an actress and wanted a quick read to help fill out my year of reading. I did find the mystery interesting and it kept me engaged to the end. I went in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

I read this because I like Krysten Ritter, but was pleasantly surprised at how well written and developed the story and characters were. A good mystery novel.
