It was interesting to read this early work of Murakami to see how he started developing his style and voice. Some bits were amusing and entertaining, but I didn’t feel like there was much of a story.

Second recently released "kitchen table" novel by Haruki Murakami is similar to the first, sort of an early taster of something much better to come from Murakami. There's glimpses of some of the usual obsessions that he'd return to over & over, but this is a thin book & likely more for long-time fans of HM rather than newcomers. I'd start w/ his better, more complete books.

I wish I could write about this book in a way that’s unbridling and profound — but this is a Murakami I have to meditate on, maybe because I relate to what the Rat goes through so much. A recommended read as it sets the tone for much of his writing that follows.
