That was a pleasure to read... there was no specific plot or anything, but the novel left me nostalgic bc of how Murakami writes. Even if this was one of his first works along with Wind, it was still good. Simple, but I enjoyed it very much. Maybe it’s just because I’ve read a lot of Murakami already and I’ve gotten used to his writing style.

Murakami's second novel, the first to be translated into English. I requested this through ILL since the book is out of print and my library didn't have a copy. A great use of $0.50.

I enjoyed reading this book and am glad that I read it close in time to the first book, [b:Hear the Wind Sing|226973|Hear the Wind Sing|Haruki Murakami|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1209948233s/226973.jpg|2902423]. I'm now ready to move on to the other two books in this series, [b:A Wild Sheep Chase|11298|A Wild Sheep Chase|Haruki Murakami|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1255726035s/11298.jpg|2057170] and [b:Dance, Dance, Dance|17800|Dance, Dance, Dance|Haruki Murakami|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166853981s/17800.jpg|2753173]. The book continues the story of The Rat and the narrator in the early 1970s. In the usual Murakami style, the book is some combination of stream of consciousness commentary and slightly weird moments (e.g., where a conversation is held with a pinball machine in a strange and unexplained warehouse).

Recommended for Murakami fans, but probably not a great place to start with his books if you aren't already a fan. I still think I'd start with either [b:The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle|11275|The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle|Haruki Murakami|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21261K7ZF9L._SL75_.jpg|2531376] (for the more weird) or [b:Norwegian Wood|11297|Norwegian Wood|Haruki Murakami|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1280183593s/11297.jpg|2956680] (for the more straightforward).

I’m feeling pretty great about my decision to approach Haruki Murakami in publication order. I’m free to enjoy the progression of these early novels without the psychological burden of comparing them to his later work. Also, if these reviews are any indication, I can be confident that greatest stuff lies ahead still. 👯‍♀️

I enjoyed this one, but not as much as I did Wind.

Short, not really gripping, but it has that lovely, quirky, Murakami-ness about it, and lots of familiar details...
