I've had a copy of this in Japanese for years. It was one of the first things I bought from Amazon after moving here, but it's near impossible to find in English. I was surprised to find a translation online, and even more surprised to find it good. Brilliant, really. Actually a better held-together work than [b:hear the wind sing|226973|Hear the Wind Sing|Haruki Murakami|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1209948233s/226973.jpg|2902423]. It's a wonder that it has never been republished, I know that no writer really wants to revisit their early work, for the same reason Radiohead will never re-release their early b-sides and demos (although I'd love to hear a well-mixed studio recording of 'big boots') There's the same yearning search that I love in the last two books in 'the (incorrectly named) trilogy of the rat' [b:a wild sheep chase|11298|A Wild Sheep Chase|Haruki Murakami|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166468809s/11298.jpg|2057170] and [b:dance dance dance|4981|Slaughterhouse-Five|Kurt Vonnegut Jr.|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1227252234s/4981.jpg|1683562], the same eccentric-bordering on frustrating characters. Definitely worth searching out.

Very strange. The pacing was incredibly odd, but it wasn't a bad read. I enjoyed Hear the Wind Sing quite a bit more, I think. Looking forward to A Wild Sheep Chase next.
