Not my favorite in the trilogy of the the Rat (Wild Sheep Chase), but still very good.

While this felt more like a cohesive novel than Hear the Wind Sing, I enjoyed Wind a bit more. Neither come close to Murakami's later works (and to be honest, they shouldn't - it would be disappointing if a novelist showed no growth over the course of his writing career), but you can still see glimpses in each of what will become Murakami's delightfully bizarre literary rendering of the world.
"The coffee smelled so good, it seemed to have a life of its own." Pinball, 1973 by Haruki Murakami
The Rat series (Hear the Wind Sing, Pinball, 1973 and A wild sheep chase) is for those people who have an idea how Murakami writes and his style. I LOVE how Murakami always writes about people who seem "normal" but they are so odd in so many ways. I can tell from his books that he loves rituals and cats, coffee. These series are one of the first novellas that he wrote, he won a prize with "Hear the Wind Sing" and then proceeded to write Pinball, 1973. It has a weird vibe to it. I definitely could tell that he was trying to find his own genre.

I've been meaning to read more of Murakami's work for years now, and upon browsing through my Kindle's library, caught a glimpse of this short novel. A good book. Not quite as weird, as Murakami-ish as Dance, Dance, Dance is but nonetheless, I'm better for having read it. It's a short read, too!
