I really enjoyed this for the most part- it’s well written, interesting and certainly is compelling reading. I did find parts to be a bit slow or repetitive, I feel like some parts could have been edited down or changed. Otherwise this is a solid novel.

First off, this was a really depressing read. Normally books of this nature tend to balance the depressing themes with something else; humour, suspense, drama, hope. But this book was depressing from cover to cover. I feel the only reason I remained interested in this book is due to working within the realm of child social care, and having real life interest in the topic. I feel we aren't miles away from some aspects covered in this book.
I couldn't figure out how I felt about Freida. Sometimes I thought she sounded like a petulant child and other times I thought she was absolutely fine and the whole plot line was a blown out of proportion reaction to a one off event. But then I suppose it's nice to read a book where the protagonist isn't a clear 'look at me I'm a bad guy!' or 'look at me I'm perfect'.
