Ok… apparently all I need is a unique book that gets my thinking and I will be happy!
Imagine having to be at your A game as a parent, 24/7. That one small mistake could mean your kids be taken from you forever, unless you can complete a correctional test in a year. At this correctional institution, they take economics class to another level. They get robot kids the same age as the ones they lose who are so real it’s almost scary. They are taught how not to hug for too long, how many times saying I love you is appropriate and how to care for them without mentally damaging them… how to deflect a tantrum without spoiling your child or keeping your frustrations in check. Oh and don’t you dare turn away for a minute if you expect to pass. After so many months they get new challenges thrown at them with new upgrades to the children. And I couldn’t help think, if it’s so important, why not make all expecting parents complete this course!? Might help keep the families together….
And then it got me thinking way too deep, and was like, WTH, why don’t we have some kind of coarse to prepare us for real?! How to communicate, discipline…. How to see the glass half-full in different situations at different stages of childhood, maybe some nutrition classes! I was a licensed daycare worker and only took 8 hours of classes is all and felt like it was information that all parents needed! I don’t think I’m alone when I say I was terrified the moment they sent me home with my baby, no instructions given. I’m just saying, lol… I mean, not to the extent of the book, but something besides breathing and breastfeeding tips would be nice! Maybe most people figure it out… but so many families get broken up constantly and sent into the system where no one gets the love or attention they need there either.
At first I didn’t think I would like this book. It was slow to get to where the book was going. I didn’t care for the mommy, I wasn’t rooting for her because I definitely thought she should get in trouble for leaving her one year old home alone for a few hours, that’s horrible! And I felt like she was trying to play it off as it was a small mistake, only one, and not as bad as others, she was only sorry that she got caught sort of thing…. But she should be looked into! HOWEVER… the extent of the way it was handled was extreme. As the book progressed, I became more invested in this correctional system, the expectations on the mother’s once they have a charge of neglect, or abuse or too coddling. And eventually I found myself rooting for her. However. If it was me working to get my kids back, I don’t think it would be as easy to get as distracted by things the way these women got. I would have been the teachers pet if it meant a year from now I could either get them or lose them. But then again, it happens daily all around us doesn’t it. It’s not fair to compare what I would do when parents really are struggling as parents in the real world. As I read, I kept wondering what a social worker would think of this system. If what they were doing was causing more harm than good?
This is a dystopian and I’m finding as I read more that dystopian is just my jam. They don’t even need that much of a plot, I’m so curious on how this world, or system is imagined. And it obviously got my hamster running on its wheels with all my deep thoughts! This story seemed to take forever to get going, but once it did, I really enjoyed it!!

So…. No
Ok so I love the message and concept of this book. The execution was just… so so not for me. I will explain to the book club people later. But I’m sorry I made us read this book. The only thing I will say with my full chest right now is that the ending was so so good! Anyways… peace, love, and birth control ✌
