This was very weird but super endearing and more emotional then I was expected. I just really like Dan Santat and his style.

A group of sea creatures observes the sinking of a research ship and the drowning of one of the researchers. The surviving brother of the researcher keeps his brother's vision alive by running a seaside marine park; however, as funds run short, he is coerced into exploiting animals such as an orca for patrons' entertainment. When the Aquanaut
Spoiler(the group of sea creatures who can understand humans but cannot speak English themselves, who have inhabited an old sea diving suit)
shows up at the marine park, the dead researcher's daughter interacts with him, setting off a chain of events that results in her and her uncle's rethinking how they want to live the rest of their lives and how best to honor the dead researcher's wishes.

Beautiful Story

I loved the unique and heartfelt story involving sea creatures to explore grief. This is a story for everyone. This graphic novel has beautiful artwork and quirky characters that all will enjoy.

A group of sea creatures seeks safety on land. A group of humans find solace on the sea.

I've always held that the family you build is as important, and sometimes more important, than your bio-fam. So when Sophie's dad is lost at sea but his old fashioned hard bodied diving suit finds her, piloted by small but determined sea creatures looking for a safe place based on having read his logs, it sets off an adventure in family and freedom, truth and right, against the power of money-grubbing capitalism and power. It reminded me of the Fraggles in how their exploration of "space" (where there is air instead of water) is in earnest but their understanding skewed by their particular experiences and what they're used to at home. If you've ever had to fight to try to save someone you love, The Aquanaut will touch your heart. Approved by Karl the Kraken (Bookmarks' magical mascot).

What a fantastic story about family, loss, the environment and helping friends! I absolutely loved the illustrations in this; they took the emotion behind this story to a completely different level. I’d hand this graphic novels to readers of the Amulet series as well as readers of Rick Riordan and Ben Hatke’s graphic novels. Perfect summer reading material!
