A beautiful book both visually and in words, The Aquanaut would make a fantastic graphic novel study for a whole class or as an independent book in the classroom. Regardless of whether for school or not, it should be accessible to all as a primarily heartfelt story with fun and whimsey as well as a way to get people thinking about marine life and the serious implications of humanity's choices in interfering with it.

The Aquanaut is a moving, emotion-packed graphic novel about grief, the environment, marine life, and family. I really enjoyed it and I think young readers will love this one. Author and illustrator, Dan Santat has crafted a deeply personal (see his Author's Note) story inspired by his relationship with his father and the care that went into this work is palpable throughout the story. The illustrations are out of this world and there's a touch of humor throughout this story. Readers will leave feeling inspired to care more about the environment but also hug their loved ones as tightly as they can.

Dan Santat is just amazing. I love his artwork. With The Aquanaut, he also authors a story that hits all the right emotional notes, reminding readers “Family comes first.” Add in sea creatures in an old-fashioned diving suit, a young girl struggling to get the attention of her uncle-guardian, and a quiet commentary on sea animals need to be in the sea not under the thumb of investors and you get one heck of a tale.
My only wish is that Uncle Paul’s mysterious research project had been explained a little bit more. I don’t understand why a giant octopus has to be a secret. Thing is, this secret project remaining mysterious did not detract from the overall incredible message of family first. Dan Santat continues to make my jaw drop with his talent.
