In the first few pages of this graphic novel, a man drowns when his boat goes under and as he dies, he makes a connection with a crab. Fast forward some years later when the man's daughter is muddling through life while her uncle tries to protect the scientific legacy he started with her father. When an old diving suit walks out of the ocean, the girl finds an unusual set of new friends to help her reconnect with her family and start beginning to heal.
There is a melancholy throughout this book, and I couldn't tell if it was purposeful or not. Santat says at the end that he finished the book after his own father passed away, so it could be. In that sense it does well combining sadness with pops of absurd silliness with the sea creatures piloting a mechanical suit. The illustrations are lively with great use of bright colors which balance out the more difficult topics like death, ethics, and loneliness. It luckily has a very hopeful and uplifting ending. This would be good for a kid who loves sea creatures or is looking for something to help with grief.
