I am immediately drawn to any book that has a sci-fi setting where we Earthlings have been displaced from our home planet. There's so many possibilities in exploring an alien world especially one with its own sentient life forms living in an established society. I always go into these books wondering how they'll examine a few questions: what does it mean to be human? Where do humans belong in the universe? What rights do humans have to their own destiny on this new planet? I felt the protagonist beginning to ask these questions as the story progressed. I have read other reviews that say the book is a slow burn, but I personally have read it twice this year and very quickly both times. I have begun the sequel already and I'm hoping to see more answers to my questions as well as more character development. I find that I didn't become as attached to some of the characters as I'd have hoped.

The first half was kind of slow... But I get it... Works building and all that. It definitely picked up a lot half way through. I'm impressed with the authors imagination because she made up a whole new world with plants and animals that are unlike anything in the real world. Pretty impressive! Think Avatar. It's a lot like that.

This is my favorite niche of sci fi (ie when the natural phenomena and/or tech is so out of our comprehension due to it being so far in the future and/or on another planet that it feels almost like fantasy). The social commentary is STRONG in this, but it didn't really feel heavy handed and balanced perfectly with the story. I think the main character acted a little unbelievably naive in some instances, but she is supposed to be a teenager so perhaps not. But other than that the animals, the way they communicate, the terrifying wildlife, family drama, and the human colony politicking all added up to an extremely enjoyable read with quite the cliff hanger.

There was a lot to like in this book: the animals, the world-building. But it was such a slow build. And there were so many things that were predictable in chapter 1 that weren’t revealed until chapter 15 or so. By the time everything happened, I wasn’t very interested anymore.

After humans destroyed Earth, they traveled to a new planet, which houses new flora, fauna and a species of aliens, Faloiv. Humans and the Faloiv have been coexisting for years, while humans continue to explore their new homes, scientifically observe the new world and develop new inventions to help humans better adapt to the environment.
Octavia hopes to follow in her parents' footsteps and become a well-respected scientist herself. However, when Octavia finally comes face to face with an animal of this new world, she begins to question everything she took for granted. The relationship between humans and this new world may not be as positive as it believed.
I enjoyed this novel. I was interested in this concept. I did have difficulty keeping track of all of the animals, and what they looked like. There was alot of world building information that became overwhelming.

Oh my god okay....the cliffhanger was really good. I dislike the main character though and I thought the romance was written badly. I loved how quickly it took everybody to get over Jaquot dying. Especially loved the scene where Yaya is talking to Octavia about what she saw and Octavia is like "It's so sad" as if she herself is an alien

honestly love it!! I had to like adjust myself to the story but after a while i couldn't stop myself to reading it. the end was so awesome and exciting. i have heard there is a second book coming up so I can't wait to read part 2!

Omg I love this book. It has elements of Divergent and I think Maria Snyder's books (both the Study series and Inside Out) and a ton of Avatar similarities, but it was unique and action packed! I want more!!
