This captivating story had it all - mystery, romance, magic, and food descriptions that left me drooling. It was utterly enchanting and unlike anything I’ve read before. I miss the characters already!

I enjoyed learning more about Chinese culture through this book. The author uses great metaphors to enliven her descriptions.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would

 Reese's Book Club Pick 38/64

The idea behind this book was cool, but I found it very hard to follow. It almost felt like the plots were too interconnected while not being connected at all. It moved around in time and between characters quickly and I found myself struggling to keep up. It's a cool story, but it just wasn't for me I don't think.

Thank you Reese Witherspoon’s Bookclub for picking this beautiful book! I never would have picked this book on my own: an eastern setting, in the early 1900s, full of magical realism... It’s not what I normally go for but I’m so glad I didn’t let that stop me.

I loved both Ji Lin and Ren, and I totally fell in love with Shin. The story was compelling and amazing and I don’t have the right words to say how much I loved it. MUST READ!
