Louise is a magnificent story teller – she has a wonderful way of drawing you into the story and then she unleashes her brilliant characters on you. The writing is masterful, and the story is just brilliant – and complicated – and I loved every little bit of it.

I appreciate the juxtaposition in this book: Catholiciscm and Ojibwe; male and female; doubt and belief; celebrating and grieving. It's a beautifully told story, for sure. I'm so troubled by the rushed ending that felt so unbelievable.

This is - so far - my favorite Erdrich novel. It tells the story of Father Damien, the priest who arrived at Little No Horse in 1912 and died in 1996. It is written with gorgeous details and I spent the entire time swooning over Erdrich's prose. I've always enjoyed her stories but found her writing to be top-notch here. So many secrets within the Nanapush, Puyat, and Lazarre clans are uncovered here, as well as Father Damien's own secret life. I am so excited to learn more about these families as I continue to read their stories.

I have a lot of questions!!!
"I have done only as I was directed by Jesus, with whom I have a personal understanding."
Great quote.
