I have not been book shopping in a long time, and when I have been near books, my intuition for great books had been dulled. Nothing on the shelf spoke to me. Today, I browsed the bookstore shelves and this book spoke to me (literally calling my name and drawing my eyes to its cover). So far I'm 60 pages in and relieved to know that my intuition is spot on once again. I already rue the day when I finish this book (which may be tomorrow).

The book had an interesting start and ultimately satisfying last half, but much of the first half was very tedious and went nowhere. I almost put it down but am glad I finished it.

Deeply confusing and confounding! This is my first Erdrich, and from the précis of her novels I'd glanced over prior to randomly selecting this one I was not expecting humour bordering on the burlesque, the magic-realism, nor the soaring lyricism of many passages - the kind of gallimaufry you associate with Marquez. It has stayed with me this last month, which says something. Probably just that I'm slow and am still working things out.

This wonderful offerring from Louise Erdrich was a delight to sink into. I'm looking forward to reading more by her including Plague of Doves and the Round House.
