I’m still enjoying re-reading this series, with this latest re-read being of the fake relationship, grumpy-sunshine variety. Usually, the fake relationship trope isn’t one of my favourites and I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite thing about this book, but it definitely worked. I loved that the grumpy-sunshine aspect of this book had Freyja being the grump and Joshua being the sunshine-y one. I loved the Freyja-Joshua pairing and the characterization of Freyja as being a little difficult and prickly and Josh as having hidden depths beneath his sunshiney outer layer. I love that the author did not soften Freyja just because she was in love and that the character development was consistent throughout. The dialogue in this was sharp and witty and it was extremely action packed in the best of ways. In line with Freyja’s characterization and a young woman chafing at the respectability bridles that society has placed on her, this novel has themes of sexism, privilege and gender equality, but also addresses to a lesser extent classism. There are content warnings for things like sexual assault, ableism and toxic parent/guardian relationships. If I have one minor complaint, it would be that sometimes the pacing was a little off and one of two times, it felt like the book was dragging a bit, but I still had a hard time putting this down and I really enjoyed this and recommend it, on the whole.
