If you're into kind of dark, gritty, hunter/hunted Star Wars, Shadow Hunter is a good read. It's not really about Darth Maul as much it is those whom he chases, but it is a good prelude to The Phantom Menace. I felt that Maul's character and past could have been delved into much more, but there is some of that in Darth Plagueis, which is an absolute masterpiece.

This book suffers a bit from being mislabeled. Darth Maul is almost a side character, who definitely features as the first person maybe only 1/4 of the book. However from what I understand some of the Coruscant characters who are features in this book are carried over into other books written by Michael Reaves: The Medstar duology and the Coruscant Nights series. So if you like these characters and Reaves' style then pick this up as a good introduction.
