Kevin Henkes is a popular author of some loved children's books. I have quite a few in my classroom since he is one of our Kindergarten authors that we study. When I requested some additional books from the library I was surprised to receive this novel as well.
Since I couldn't read it aloud to my class (too mature for them) I decided to read it myself. Olives Ocean is a quick read and very enjoyable. I liked the story line and found myself lost in plot and unable to put it down. A quick/fun read for the summer.

great coming of age tale, recommended to me by one of the librarians at the branch i trained at. quick read that stays with you.
Me trying to figure out why this is challenged/banned... couldn't find a reason. Very sweet coming of age story.
Beautifully written, poignant and true. It made me ache to be burdened by twelve year old cares again. The world is wide open and your dreams are secrets you barely whisper aloud.
His book Lily and the purple plastic purse has been a family favorite-- it was fun to see glimpses of his quirky take on reality in Martha's story.

I read this years ago when I was in elementary school. I remember being forced to read it and and I hate reading sad books so I put up a fight. It was sad. I bawled my eyes out. Don't remember why. I saw this randomly on goodreads just now and it brought back a ton of memories so I totally don't remember what happened but I remember it was sad and I cried and how sad it was.

This is the second Henkes chapter book I have read. There are definite themes: the ocean, children's relationships with adults, and the power of the internal world we create. I find his books to be pretty moody and above most children's emotional level. I get the distinct feeling that adults like these books because they are an adult's view about how childhood is... Maybe I was a dolt as a child, but I really don't remember having such a grasp on the subtle emotional world around me, as Henkes characters tend to... Anyhow, it's well written, and moves quickly, and I think it would appeal to a certain type of serious, introverted, mature young person. Note to parents: there is ONE swear and ONE kiss.
