I mean, it was thorough?
I remain convinced that Hermione Lee is the only biographer worth reading. This didn't change my mind.
But it did assault me with a loooooot of facts about Hamilton. So if you're into that, have at it.
ALSO, I remain deeply skeptical of historians and biographers in particular that assign intent to the actions or details they're relaying. X person "snidely" did Y, or "surely was thinking of X when they said Y". All you know is the text itself; applying adjectives is an editorial intervention, and it seems to VERY conveniently tell a specific narrative, etc.
Anyway, historians, wtf.

4.5 rounded up! So many things to like about this book. I did listen to the expertly narrated audio. Many times I found myself humming one song or another from the musical brought on by hearing a few phrases. A truly excellent work of biography; no surprise from Chernow.

I first bought this book after watching and loving the play Hamilton. I can see why this biography of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hamilton was a wildly intriguing and brilliant Founding Father who could have reached even higher had he not gotten into fights with other Founding Fathers and if he could’ve kept his pants on.
I got goosebumps reading this book and seeing where Miranda drew his inspiration including the phrase “throwing away my shot” (such deeper meaning than I knew!) and the play’s reverence for the equally remarkable Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. Not sure if Hamilton deserved her.
