This has to be up there with the other amazing TJR books in her line up! Or at least for me this is so close to taking over number one spot with Seven Husbands. I’m a sucker for a love story and a bigger sucker for all things space. Highly recommend, and I will be reading again even though I know the ending, but I just want to feel something again!
Atmosphere is hands down one of my favorite reads of 2025. Taylor Jenkins Reid once again delivers exactly what I’ve come to expect from her: unforgettable, complex female characters and emotionally rich storytelling that lingers long after the final page.
This novel tackles a taboo topic for its time period with boldness and care, while also spotlighting women in a field traditionally dominated by men—NASA and space exploration. Reid masterfully contrasts different types of women, showing us bravery in unexpected places and courage that doesn’t always look the way we expect. Themes of passion, belief, ambition, and sacrifice are woven in seamlessly, and I learned so much about NASA while being completely swept away by the story.
I spent the last 30 pages on the edge of my seat, tears streaming. When I closed the book, I was hit with full-body sobs. Atmosphere broke me in the most beautiful way. Joan’s decisions—especially the ones involving her sister and niece—made me scream internally at times, but they added such depth to her character. She’s real, raw, and unforgettable.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves stories about fierce women, historical fiction with emotional depth, and a little bit of space magic. Just be prepared to cry.
“How entirely undemanding of yourself it was to believe that everything happened to you. And everything was about you. And that your feelings were the only ones that mattered. Worse yet, to afford yourself the role of the victim always—regardless of how grotesquely it required you to twist reality—so that you never had to look in the mirror and admit you were the perpetrator.”
