I don't always love TJR but as a 80s kid I had to read this one. I was too small for Challenger memories, only later echos as it dampened the NASA discussions. I've seen other reviews find the lack of space annoying.
The thing is going to space is only a small part. It's the training...trying to balance work/home with plans to be away awhile.... learning all the constant data changes as our equipment upgrades.
This was especially true in the 80s. How many of us watched the astronauts tumble in space? Talk about their findings? We were allowed to see how things mattered.
Joan and Vanessa's different life views offer a lot of self discovery based on reactions. Loved the slow build, watching Joan find herself. To be together in a time of bigotry and hostility by the Moral Right. Every more terrifying than now because women like these were real back then and paved the way.
Stunning story, conclusion, and character arcs.Even when I felt like crying over the dead colleagues and friends. A return to the Evelyn Hugo build up and reveals.
But Barbara still sucks.
