Great setting, interesting story

I really liked the worldbuilding in this, and it did a great job hooking me into the story right up front. The opening rather reminded me of Martha Wells' Wheel of the Infinite, though of course everything went in different directions from there. The characterization and storytelling was solid, except for the part where two friends suddenly decide being friends isn't good enough anymore. That felt both unwarranted and sadly predictable. I'd read more stories about Zerafine all the same.

Fun epic fantasy/mystery with appealing characters and strong world-building. Recommended especially to Pagans/polytheists looking for a fantasy novel in which the God of Death is *not* the villain.

I liked the ideas of this book but it felt rough. Like there were sections where there wasn't enough description and a lot of the character motivations weren't fleshed out enough. Although you could tell what was going to happen, because most of the characters felt familiar, the lack of individuality in the characters didn't make it too interesting. Also there were a lot of character names and you weren't given enough time to learn who they were.
