people either hate or love this book and i think i merely float in the space between; the place where i understood it (her) completely. i read this in the perfect state of mind, as in im exactly in the place she’s in. it’s a gory depiction of femininity and a beautiful description of aloof insanity. proceed with caution if you want to delve into this story.

This book is extremely overhyped, depressing, plotless, and 288 pages that I wish I could unread.

The two stars I did give it are for the fact that Moshfegh is a good enough writer in that she can write a book that’s readable - but this story is a collection of privileged whines that I wouldn’t recommend even cracking open if you’ve ever suffered from addiction or bulimia.

I still think about this book all. The. Time. I was enthralled by the angst and absurdity of it all. The main character is not exactly likeable, but her weirdness with moments of absolute emotional clarity did it for me. The narrator also was fantastic and sold me on some of the other characters as well.

I really enjoyed the writing of this book, it was honestly hilarious. But the narrator is unbearable at times, racist, mean, uppity. But once her year of rest is fully up she’s suddenly a completely changed person? Idk…book was enjoyable, the writing was dark and humorous but reflective and deep. Narrator sucked though, 10/10 could not stand in real life lol.

rating this is weird because obviously I hated it. there were no redeeming characters, everyone's actions were incredibly selfish, and I had a terrible time. but like.. duh. the writing style was incredibly accessible and wonderful to read and I was somewhat entranced by our narrator's incredibly self destructive behavior. yeah this is for sure not for everyone but I think it's just an intoxicating and infuriating story in the best way.

I will admit I was a little disappointed everything went her way in the end? like I for some reason hoped it killed her or something because I maybe am a bad person idk

not sure what to make of this book. it’s definitely not for everyone and i can see why it’s so controversial. on one hand, i really appreciated how true to life it felt in portraying a depressive episode that robs you of any ability to feel or operate like anything resembling a human being; however, that felt a little TOO real for me at times, which is more of a personal thing than a complaint about the book. obviously the narrator is unlikeable, and i kind of liked that because it’s different and challenging and i hate the trend of audiences gravitating solely towards media with a clear-cut, black-and-white portrayal of a hero with perfect morals. but i can also understand why some readers hate the narrator so much they find it unbearable to read, and it’s certainly difficult to really connect with her. i liked the writing and i was very impressed by the fact that a book where virtually nothing happens could have me hooked to the point that i read it as quickly as i did. for some reason i did expect some more dramatic twists or turns in the plot and was left a little disappointed and wanting more from the ending, but i can respect that it wouldn’t have really represented the character or the experience of depression. overall i liked it but it wasn’t my favorite book i’ve ever read
