4/5 stars for this fairytale middle grade! Such a cute series!

It's another great story set in Enchantasia, with fabulous and funny twists on all your favorite fairy tales. Again, it's nothing too revolutionary, but it's a great follow-up that sits neatly in the established universe while expanding the world enough to keep things interesting. If you've been enjoying the series thus far, you'll like this one as well.

It's an excellent story about recognizing how you are in charge of writing your own story, only you and only your story. It got a little annoying, because Gilly was a little slow on the uptake in a way I didn't think was perfectly true to character, but the concept is one that IS rather difficult for kids to grasp, so it can be excused.

Gilly recognizes that the bad guys trying to control her life cannot legitimately do so--she has the power to defy expectations--and she very explicitly connects the way the villains are restricting her choices to the way SHE is restricting her sister's. It's a good moment, and there is a solid amount of clear discussion around it, ensuring that kids truly can absorb the lesson. Personally, I still found it a touch annoying.

Particularly as that is the only thing really accomplished by the narrative. This one didn't have nearly as many layers to it as the others, which means it's definitely not my favorite, but it's still a quick, fun, engaging read.

THE REVIEW

Why this book?
I liked the other books in the series

What I thought
This was by far my favorite in the series so far. Gilly is very likable unlike the last book, She just wants to look after her sister. Who is a little brat in my opinion. I really love the characters in this series in exception of a few like I mentioned before. Following these characters lives are fun and eventful and you never know what is going to happen next. I really enjoy the Fairy Tale aspect and look forward to the next book.
