This was the best book I’ve read this year, and most likely is the best book I’ve ever read. Highly recommend.

It’s a challenge to standout in the sea of World War II historical fiction, but I think this novel has done it. I was intrigued from the beginning, and it held my attention right to the end. I’m not sure how historically accurate the story is, but that’s not the reason I read historical fiction. I am perfectly happy to allow authors creative licence to make small adjustments for the sake of their plot, which I know Kelly Bowen has done (because she tells us in the Authors Note at the end).
I really enjoyed the dual timeline and the multiple perspectives. Though my own difficulty with remembering names made differentiating between the two POVs in the past a bit difficult.
Overall, this was excellent.

This exquisite book seems demure and simple, the story of those caught up in the fight to stop Hitler. Underneath, it is so much more. It is about love, and survival, about loss and hope, about being responsible to something much bigger than oneself and the selflessness that requires. Our society has become much more inward-thinking. As we’ve observed in the past 18 months or so, many actions are based on “what’s in it for us?” and, “only I am important.” Had the unsung heroes and heroines of WWII believed the same, our world would like be a very different place today.
