We hear from three generations of women in this book and explore each one’s mixed feelings about marriage and motherhood.
Each woman’s story was fully explored and engaging for me. I’m a mother in my 40s now, and I got to relate to each of these characters’ experience of this time of life. I also appreciated the explorations of sexuality at different times in history.
Was this book uplifting? Depressing? Hopeful? Tense? I’m going to say it was all of and none of the above. Most of all, it was real. I may not be a cello playing rock star, the founder of a commune, or the survivor of genocide, but I felt through this book like I could know and understand each of the three main characters. That’s some good writing.

I didn’t find the characters entirely relatable. I did, however, enjoy the different viewpoints of the various generations and appreciate the strong feminine energy. Quite vulgar at times. Overall, it was okay.
