Inspiring. Dark. Set in Australia, which I always love, this book touched on themes of growing up in poverty, amongst family trauma and drug addiction, whilst also exploring queerness and transgender identity. Beautifully written, couldn't put it down.

So different to Jasper Jones. This book is filled with angst, pain, dread and although other reviews say it is predictable, it is in some ways but not others. There is the constant feeling that something terrible is going to happen yet always hope that something good will be the outcome. I enjoyed this for the completeness of the story, the breadth of the characters and the inherent goodness in most of them. It showed the dreadful events that happen to people who are considered different to mainstream, yet they so often are much nicer that so called normal people. The amount of love that comes from people Sam meets, which ultimately lets him become who he wants to be, is heartening.
