hmmm, I wanted to love this. But: animal testing/experimentation, people testing/experimentation, forced institutionalization and a weird “monster” chase… not the kind of monsters I’m looking for. The ending was pretty good though.

this was SO. GOOD. Once that first twist hit, it was all uphill for me. I couldnt put it down & I devoured this book in a day and a half. It's so well-paced & the reveals are very well-done. I also love the underlying Frankenstein themes sprinkled throughout. The ending is phenomenal as well. This author reminds me of Simone St. James with the way she executes dual timelines and the creepy vibes. I've owned 3 of McMahon's books for a while now, and I will definitely be getting to them soon after this masterpiece.

This is another hit for Ms McMahon! It has everything that you want in a book like this; mystery, suspense, thrills and so much more...

Many thanks to Netgalley and Gallery Books, Gallery/Scout Press for this advanced readers copy. This book released April 26, 2022.

3.5 rounded up which is HARD because Jennifer McMahon is a favorite of mine and her books usually hit so hard.

Something about this one didn't fully connect with me. For the first 60% I felt almost non committed to the story. But man that last 40% was fantastic.

As always, in any book from McMahon, she sets you up perfectly to think you have the twist figured out only to realize you were ALMOST THERE but also NOT AT ALL. So you get to be shocked and also pleasantly surprised with yourself for ALMOST getting it.

The one thing that was really missing that her books usually have was the atmosphere. McMahon is known her the creepy, small town, haunting, almost suffocating atmospheric tension, and that was non existent in this book. HOWEVER I do think that has more to do with this plot and I applaud her for trying out a completely different type of story idea than usual while still sticking with her 2 timeline staple.

Now that I'm writing this I'm realizing I liked it more than I thought I did...you can always count on a Jennifer McMahon book to throw you into an existential crisis while also giving you the creeps.
